The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) officially came into force on August 1, 2024. This legislation establishes a comprehensive regulatory framework for AI, aiming to ensure that AI systems used in the EU are safe, ethical, transparent, and human-centric.
The AI Act introduces a risk-based approach to AI regulation, categorizing AI systems based on their potential to cause harm. High-risk AI systems, which include those used in critical infrastructure, healthcare, and biometric identification, will face stringent requirements and oversight. The regulation mandates conformity assessments, CE marking, and post-market surveillance to ensure continuous compliance and safety.
Implementation will occur in stages:
February 2025: Prohibitions on AI systems posing unacceptable risks come into effect.
August 2025: Rules for general-purpose AI models and designation of national authorities will apply.
August 2026: Full applicability of rules for high-risk AI systems listed in Annex III.
August 2027: Application of rules for high-risk AI systems listed in Annex I.
This regulation is complemented by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which continues to apply to all personal data processing. The AI Act adds specific requirements for AI systems, enhancing the existing data protection framework.
